The Final Countdown

By Sarah Tonsmeire Last week’s race at Phoenix International Raceway fit right in with the unpredictable nature of this year’s NASCAR season. The season’s last race in the desert was one of the wettest races this season. Unfortunately, the rain led to somewhat of an anti-climatic ending to one of the most significant races of the season. With Phoenix being the final race in the final elimination round of the Chase, four out of eight drivers were eliminated following the […]

By Sarah Tonsmeire As NASCAR heads into its last race of the third elimination round, there are a few drivers who are able to clinch a spot in the final four if they perform well, but it’s a tight race this year. Jeff Gordon has already clinched a spot in the Final Four. Kyle Busch can clinch this weekend with a finish of third or better if he doesn’t lead laps, and Kevin Harvick can clinch a spot with a […]

By Sarah Tonsmeire As the saying goes, “Cautions breed cautions.” This was certainly true last weekend at Martinsville Speedway with eighteen cautions during the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500.  Leading a mere thirty-five of the 500 laps, Jeff Gordon found himself in Victory Lane on Sunday for his first win this season.  Gordon is no rookie to victory lane at Martinsville, Sunday being his ninth win there, but this win could be the most memorable for him.  Sunday’s race propelled […]

By Sarah Tonsmeire Now that only eight drivers remain in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, NASCAR begins the final elimination round before the finale at Miami Homestead Speedway.  Known for its bright pink hot dogs and grandfather clock trophy, NASCAR heads to the shortest track on the circuit this weekend, Martinsville Speedway.  Measuring just over half a mile long, with twelve degree banking in the turns, this short track has been named “The Paperclip.”  Tempers are sure to […]

By Sarah Tonsmeire The third and final race of the Contender round of the Chase commences at NASCAR’s most unpredictable track, Talladega Superspeedway.  Known as the largest track, sitting 2.66 miles around, Talladega has earned a name for its massive wrecks, referred to as “the Big One” that occurs during each race.  With a 43 car field, running at speeds near 200 miles per hour and navigating four turns with 33 degree banking, things can get hairy quickly at this […]

By Sarah Tonsmeire Last weekend, Joey Logano dominated the Bank of America 500 at the well-known 1.5 mile track, Charlotte Motor Speedway.  He has guaranteed a spot at one of the final eight Chase drivers.  Who will be next? Take a look at who to keep an eye on Sunday. This week, NASCAR heads to the land of Toto and Dorothy for the second race of the second elimination round of the Chase.  Kansas Speedway is a 1.5 mile, D-shaped oval […]

Anticipated 2016 Package Announced

By Sarah Tonsmeire Other than the 2016 schedule, NASCAR made the most anticipated announcement today, the 2016 rules package. If the glimpses the Kentucky and Darlington packages provided this season foreshadowed what’s to come in 2016, next season will be action packed. The current rules package places major emphasis on the aerodynamics of the car.  Races at intermediate tracks this season have been plagued with single drivers dominating the majority of the race.  It has been nearly impossible for drivers to […]

Joey Logano Escapes Elimination

Posted by Sarah Tonsmeire On Oct - 11 - 2015 Add Comments

By Sarah Tonsmeire Chase contenders who were having strong runs today spent the majority of the race chasing down Joey Logano, while a few key contenders raced against the clock.  Pole Sitter Matt Kenseth was dominant out of the chute, leading over seventy laps early in the race.  But after losing several spots in track position, Kenseth found himself in the garage for repairs after contact with Ryan Newman and later contact with the outside wall.  Kenseth was not able […]

By Sarah Tonsmeire What a whirlwind of a weekend it was at Dover International Speedway.  For the many times the current rules package led to an uneventful race, Sunday’s race proved to be one of the best under the current package.  Leading into the weekend, all eyes were on Jimmie Johnson as the favorite.  Undeniably, Johnson is the most dominant driver at Dover International Speedway, and certainly the one to beat.  Kevin Harvick went into Sunday having to win in […]

Recap and Preview: Drenched at Dover

By Sarah Tonsmeire Last weekend’s race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway resulted in heartbreaking finishes for several Chase contenders.  Kevin Harvick clearly had the most dominant car throughout the race, winning restarts and leading the most laps. However, all of those factors became irrelevant when Harvick ran out of gas on the last leg of the race.  The No. 4 team defended that their fuel calculations were correct and that Harvick had saved enough fuel, but claimed that the fuel […]
